Proactive Improvements Paired with a Simple Reminder: Don’t Flush Wipes Down the Toilet

Maricopa, Ariz. – January 15, 2025 - Global Water, the city’s local water resource management company, has successfully completed an important infrastructure project at its Water Reclamation Facility #1 (‘WRF’) located at 22590 Powers Parkway in the City of Maricopa. The upgrade included the replacement of an aging lift station screen and the rehabilitation of a degraded wet well, both vital for ensuring the continued efficiency and reliability of the facility. The $2.2 million project was executed in collaboration with contractors Garney and Capital Pump.

The new Huber Technology screen, measuring 35 feet in length and weighing 750 pounds, effectively removes debris such as rags, paper, plastics, and wipes. This prevents damage and clogging of downstream WRF equipment and piping, allowing for the efficient operation of the facility. Additionally, the well-designed screening system enhances safety at the WRF, which treats over 4 million gallons of wastewater daily for the City of Maricopa.

“This upgrade was critical to maintaining the performance of our Water Reclamation Facility,” said Jon Corwin, Vice President and General Manager of Global Water. “The original lift station screen had reached the end of its useful life, and the wet well required rehabilitation to counteract typical wear and degradation. By proactively addressing these needs, we are safeguarding the facility’s operations and reliability for years to come. To help extend the life of its infrastructure, Global Water asks customers not to throw anything into the toilet including baby wipes or cleaning wipes, those should be discarded into the trash.”

The project addressed two key issues: the old screen had reached the end of its useful life, and the wet well required rehabilitation due to typical degradation. These enhancements ensure the reliable and efficient operation of WRF, which is critical for serving the City of Maricopa. Located behind Global Water’s headquarters on Powers Parkway, the facility plays a vital role in wastewater treatment and water sustainability initiatives, by recycling and protecting water resources in a rapidly growing region. This facility recycles over 1 billion gallons of water per year that are beneficially reused in the community in the lakes for irrigating common areas, saving precious groundwater.
